Sampling Bias
A systematic error that occurs when the group of customers surveyed is not representative of the entire customer population.
Sampling bias occurs when certain segments of your customer base are over- or under-represented in your survey sample. If your sample is not representative of the full population, the conclusions drawn from the data may be misleading.
Common sources of sampling bias in customer feedback include: surveying only active users (missing the views of inactive or churning customers), channel bias (email surveys may miss customers who prefer in-app communication), timing bias (weekday surveys may under-represent weekend users), and self-selection bias (only motivated customers respond).
The impact of sampling bias can be significant. If your NPS survey only reaches your most engaged customers, your score will be artificially high. If your CSAT survey only goes to customers who contacted support, it may miss the perspective of customers who never needed help.
To reduce sampling bias, define your target population clearly, use random or stratified sampling methods, reach customers through multiple channels, and compare the demographics and behaviors of respondents versus non-respondents. When bias is unavoidable, acknowledge it when reporting results and weight responses where possible.
