A/B Testing Surveys

A method of comparing two versions of a survey (different questions, formats, or timing) to determine which produces better response rates or data quality.

A/B testing in the context of surveys involves creating two (or more) variations of a survey element and randomly assigning respondents to each version. The goal is to determine which version produces better results—higher response rates, more actionable data, or lower abandonment.

Elements commonly A/B tested include question wording, survey length, rating scale type (5-point vs 7-point), the inclusion or exclusion of incentives, send timing (morning vs afternoon, day of week), subject lines for email surveys, and the visual design of the survey.

The same statistical rigor that applies to product A/B tests applies here: adequate sample size, random assignment, and a pre-defined success metric. Running a survey A/B test with only 50 respondents per variant will not produce statistically significant results.

A/B testing surveys is particularly valuable during the initial design phase. Before committing to a survey format that will run for months or years, test variations to ensure you are maximizing response quality from the start. Small improvements in response rate or data quality compound over time.
